2013 Squad Numbers Announced

Story in brief:

Castleford Tigers has today announced its squad numbers for Super League XVIII and also unveiled former England international Michael Shenton as the new captain.

Seven new signings plus talented youngsters join the squad that are preparing for a tough early challenge when the Tigers face Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in the first round of Super League.

Head Coach Ian Millward said, "Number three and four are particularly exciting. We were vulnerable in the centres last year and we now have two players in Michael Shenton and Jake Webster with international experience to fulfil those positions.

"We also have two specialist second rowers in Lee Gilmour and Weller Hauraki at 11 and 12 that will offer us more experience in both attack and defence."

Jonathan Walker moves to number eight to accommodate the incoming Hauraki from Leeds Rhinos whilst Justin Carney will take the number two jersey and fellow new recruit Jamie Ellis will replace Danny Orr at number seven to offer the prospect of an exciting partnership with Rangi Chase in the backs.

Final new signing, Jordan Tansey picks up number 19 and the squad is completed with promising youngsters prop and Welsh international Daniel Fleming, half back Ben Johnston, second rower Charlie Martin and winger James Clare.

Millward added, "The players have been training hard but there's no hiding from the fact that we ideally need extra depth - we are on the lookout for new additions to the squad but this is subject to club finances being available to enable us to recruit further." 

Of the decision to hand the captaincy over to Shenton, Millward said, "I have been very impressed with Michael's attitude and willingness to contribute in training so far. As a former England international he has made a big statement returning to Castleford and I believe he will be a great captain for us."
