In a scrappy, highly charged game in the South of France, Castleford Tigers just failed to come away with the victory, losing 13-12 to Catalans Dragons.

The game was far from a classic and will be remembered for three sin binnings, after a fight towards the end of the first half and many more incidents that may be looked at by the RFL Disciplinary panel.

Castleford opened the scoring in Catalans with new signing, Ben Roberts lofting a kick over the Catalans defence allowing Justin Carney to catch the ball and tip toe down the sideline to score in the corner.

Both sides then had tries chalked off by the video referee. First Zeb Taia crashed over for the Dragons but was held up by three Tigers defenders before Luke Gale's towering kick that was collected and put down by Denny Solomona. The video referee then could not find a sufficient angle to award the try.

With five minutes left in the first half, Eloi Pelissier was penalised for a shoulder charge on Scott Wheeldon. This incident turned into a 26-man brawl with every player of the field getting involved. At the end of it all, Pelissier, Oliver Elima and Jake Webster saw yellow for their involvements.

In a scrappy end to the half, Scott Dureau decided to utilise one of the many penalties in the game and had a kick at the sticks, but the Dragons halfback missed to leave the Tigers 6-0 up at the half way break.

Dureau created Catalans first try of the game with a kick back towards the posts that was met by full back Morgan Escare, who touched down.

After a high tackle from Carney, Dureau decided to put his side ahead by two points with a penalty kick.

Catalans next try came from an Ian Henderson kick. He booted the ball toward Michael Oldfield, who patted the ball back to Ben Pomeroy. The centre then popped the ball back to Elliott Whitehead, who dove over in near the corner.

The Tigers then pulled the game back level with less than 10 minutes left. Carney ran onto a Liam Finn pass and burst through the Catalans defence. Jordan Tansey took Carney's pass back inside and scored close to the posts to leave Gale with a simple kick.

The Dragons had two attempts at a drop goal. After his first effort was charged down, Dureau just managed to kick the one pointer with help from the upright.

After it looked like Catalan had clinched the win, Carney collected a high ball from a Dureau kick and charged down the field giving the Tigers great field position. The attack was stopped after Scott Moore fumbled at the play of the ball.
