Castleford Tigers hopes of having a new home came a step closer today as Wakefield Council planning permission was approved.
Castleford Tigers hopes of having a new home came a step closer today as Wakefield Council planning permission for the Five Towns Park £135m development received the stamp of approval this afternoon.

Members of Wakefield Council's planning committee approved the outline application at a planning committee meeting this afternoon, attended by plenty of loyal Castleford Tigers Fans.

Speaking on behalf of the 6000 + people who signed letters backing the development were Philip Lunn of Lateral Property Group, Tigers CEO Steve Gill, local resident Barbara Hughes and Castleford Tigers Supporters Club's Paul Burns-Williamson. Barbara, a lifelong Cas fan spoke with such a passion for the club and the town, that the public viewing gallery erupted into a round of applause to commend her emotional heartfelt words.

Steve Gill said: "Today has been a big milestone in the clubs history and one I'm so proud to be part of. The team here have worked tirelessly to get to this point and I'm overwhelmed by the masses of support we have received and the well wishes, especially from other Super League clubs, cementing the fact that Rugby League is the best sport in the world, with awesome fans.

Steve added: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers at Wakefield for all their hard work over the last year in processing this major application. We would also like to thank everyone who has taken the time to write a letter of support and to those who have attended the planning committee meeting today. The application will now be referred to the National Planning Casework Unit for their consideration and we must await their decision."

The Tigers hope to take up residency in the new 10,000 capacity community stadium, which will form part of Five Towns Park, which will also include a a retail development, petrol station and a country park.

The planning meeting heard how more than 6,000 people signed a petition backing the application by the Lateral Property Group.

During the meeting councillors also approved a mezzanine extension to Asda, on Leeds Road, Glass Houghton.
