The
Castleford Rugby League Football Club was founded in June 1926 and
has since competed out of its current home ground at Wheldon Road.
Even in those formative years the club was quick to achieve success
winning the Yorkshire league in 1932, followed by their first
Challenge Cup title in 1935.Another three Challenge Cup titles
have since followed along with a number of other prestigious
trophies including the Yorkshire Cup and the Regal Trophy.
Castleford has grown to become one of the most famous Rugby League
Clubs in the United Kingdom and has
consistently
produced players who have achieved worldwide status in the game of
Rugby League.
As the sport of Rugby League has evolved over the years, the
Castleford Rugby League Club has continued to accept the challenges
they have faced with great pride and enthusiasm, the Castleford area
has always been, and continues to be, a rich nursery of Rugby League
talent and the club has always competed at the top level whilst
representing the community in a professional manner.
This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that since the
introduction of two
divisions
in 1973 the Castleford Tigers are one of only three professional
clubs to have constantly remained in the top division of British
Rugby League.
In recent years the club has continued to prosper in this
division with some outstanding results. The Tigers were the leading
club in Yorkshire in the early 1990s, finishing in the top four
sides in the competition no less than four times during this period.
The highlight was in 1994 when the Castleford Tigers defeated the
High Flying Wigan Warriors to claim the regal Trophy, were
semi-finalists in the challenge cup and were narrowly defeated in
the premiership final.
The Castleford Tigers’ elite position within the sport of Rugby
League was further highlighted in 1995 when the club accepted a
franchise to compete in the inaugural European Super League. THE
NEXT CHALLENGE HAD BEGUN!
Season 1999 was the Tigers best year when we reached the semi
finals of both the Challenge Cup and the Grand Final play offs. We
made the semi final of the Challenge Cup once again in 2002 and were
always competitive in Super League, attracting big crowds and often
punching above our weight.
However we never recovered from a bad start in 2004 and our
coveted Super League place was lost. There was a resolve to secure
an immediate return and although the National League proved to be
harder than some expected, when it came to the crunch the Tigers
fought their way through to the Grand Final and were far too strong
for Whitehaven.
2006 saw the Tigers back in Super League, but despite a valiant
effort, and a record number of points for a relegated side, we
weren't able to retain our place in the top flight. In fact the
Tigers weren't even bottom of the table. That fate fell to the
Catalans Dragons, but the new French side had a 3 year exemption
from relegation, so as the next to the bottom team, the Tigers went
back into the National League.
Once again though our stay was kept to the minimum as we stormed
through the National League One campaign, losing just one league
game, recording a club record score of 106 - 0 against Rochdale and
finishing at the top of the table.
The 2007 Play Off final saw the Tigers facing second placed
Widnes but it was 'no contest' as we triumphed 42 - 10 to secure our
Super League return.
